Step into the Dojo: Traditional Martial Arts in Marshall

This exciting course introduces students to Shorin-ryu Matsumura Seito karate, one of the oldest styles originating straight from Okinawa, Japan—the birthplace of all karate.

Designed for students of all ages and fitness levels, this program goes beyond basic exercise to offer a rich cultural experience. Participants will practice:

• Junbi Undo: Traditional warm-ups and conditioning to build strength and flexibility.
• Kihon & Kata: Fundamental techniques, striking combinations, and beginning forms of the style.
• Partner Drills & Self-Defense: Pre-arranged partner exercises designed to build practical skills, reaction time, and balance.
• Cultural Immersion: Learn about Okinawan culture while developing lifelong habits of confidence, respect, and mental discipline.

Learn from an Expert Instructor

Students will learn under the guidance of Walt Young, a licensed teacher of the style and the senior practitioner of the Okinawa Shorin-ryu Matsumura Seito Suiken Bugei Kai (Martial Arts Association). Walt has been training in Okinawan karate since 1989, has lived in both Okinawa and mainland Japan and brings decades of authentic experience to the Marshall Community Center!

• Uniform Note: Students will be required to purchase a karate uniform ($50) and official patch ($10). Details will be provided during the first class session.
