Pro-Tips for Virginia Soil
Our Northern Virginia clay can be a bit stubborn, so keep these three rules in mind before you start digging:
Check the Thermometer: Wait until the soil temperature reaches at least 55°F. If the ground is too cold and soggy, your bulbs might rot before they ever get the chance to sprout.
Drainage is Key: Most summer bulbs hate "wet feet." If your flower bed tends to hold water, consider mixing in some compost or planting them in raised containers.
Watch the Wind: Tall plants like Cannas and Gladioli can act like sails in a spring thunderstorm. Plant them in areas protected by a fence or the side of the house to keep them from snapping.
A Note for Our Tenants: Thinking of starting a garden? Most of our properties are happy to have the extra greenery! Just remember to check your lease or send us a quick note before making any permanent changes to the landscaping. Pots and containers are always a safe (and portable!) bet.
Why Garden in March?
Planting now gives these "tender" bulbs the time they need to establish strong roots before the sweltering Virginia humidity hits in July. It’s an investment in your future Saturday mornings imagine drinking your coffee on the porch surrounded by fresh lilies and vibrant dahlias!
