Sip Like a Founding Father: The George Washington Whiskey Tasting

At Alls Real Estate, we’re always looking for ways to connect our neighbors with the incredible history and culture that surrounds us here in Northern Virginia. While we spend a lot of time helping you find the perfect home in Warrenton and beyond, we also believe in celebrating the local heritage that makes our region so unique.

This season, we’re highlighting an event that is as historic as it is flavorful: the George Washington Whiskey Tasting.

A Spirit Rooted in History

Did you know that by 1799, George Washington’s distillery was one of the largest in America? It produced nearly 11,000 gallons of whiskey a year! Today, that legacy lives on at the faithfully reconstructed George Washington’s Distillery & Gristmill.

Located just a short drive from the main Mount Vernon estate, this working distillery uses 18th-century methods to produce small-batch spirits. It’s a fascinating look at Washington’s entrepreneurial spirit—and a great excuse for a Saturday outing.

The Experience

When you attend a tasting, you’re not just grabbing a drink; you’re stepping back in time. The experience includes:

  • A Guided Tasting: Sample three distilled spirits, including the famous unaged Rye Whiskey, the Straight Rye (aged 2-4 years), and the Premium Rye (aged a minimum of 4 years).
  • The Gristmill & Distillery Tour: Your ticket includes a tour of the facilities where you can see the massive water-powered wheels and copper stills in action.
  • All-Day Admission: Your tasting ticket also grants you general admission to the Mount Vernon estate for the day—a $30 value!

Plan Your Visit (2026 Schedule)

Tastings take place on Saturdays in May, June, and September from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Since these events are held outdoors (per Virginia law regarding spirits storage), they offer a beautiful way to spend a spring or late-summer afternoon.

  • Location: 5513 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, Alexandria, VA.
  • Cost: $60 for the general public / $50 for Mount Vernon members.
  • Pro-Tip: Your tour typically begins one hour before your scheduled tasting, so be sure to check your ticket time!

Why We Love It

At Alls Real Estate, we talk a lot about "smart living," and that includes taking advantage of the world-class landmarks in our own backyard. Whether you’re a history buff, a whiskey connoisseur, or just looking for a unique Saturday plan with friends, this event is a local gem.

Support our state's official spirit and take a sip of history. We’ll see you out there!
